What does make us change our actions? Tali Sharot reveals three ingredients to doing what's good for yourself.
Dr. Tali Sharot is a neuroscientist at University College London and the director of the Affective Brain Lab. She is a faculty member of the department of Experimental Psychology, a Wellcome Trust Fellow, and currently a visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School. Her research focuses on how emotion, motivation, and social factors influence our expectations, decisions, and memories.

In case you have a unique project where no many people or even anyone has ever made it, I believe that the "Social incentive" can be replaced by "Environment incentive", which means creating a workplace with no distractions (cellphones, photos, etc.) so that you can avoid triggering procrastination.
Notes: -Science shows that warning has little influence on behavior; it's effective but limited. -People tend to change their beliefs towards a more desirable option (in all ages) -Kids, teenagers, and elderly people are less likely to learn from warnings Three principles that drive the behavior and mind 1-Social incentive: we are motivated through the positive actions of others. 2-Immediate reward: reward your good behavior. 3-Progress monitoring: We are motivated by seeing progress. -Highlight the process, not the decline -Giving people a sense of control is a motivator

I’m really surprised to hear most people hear positive news better than warnings. If one doctor warns me about something and the other doctor give me only a positive outlook, I’m going to think the positive outlook doctor is incompetent to be quite honest.

I totally disagree that warnings, campaign and fear doesn't work on smokers. I know few people who have quit, saying that they hate the pictures on the package. I remember my childhood - everyone in 8th grade were smoking. Now, as a teacher, I see few. Also statistics show that smoking isn't seen as glamourous as during the 90's. There has been huge decline. What do you say? That people have just come to their senses? No , the policy has actually worked. Not one young person would imagine what the bars looked like here 15 years ago when smoking was still allowed indoors - you could smoke a fish in a bar on saturday night. People are not that motivated to go indoors. People who really wanted to quit have done it by now. Same with speeding. I know that police isn't the best motivation but it's still better than nothing. I know people who keep watching speed limit when they know that police is on the road. Otherwise they wouldn't care. And it works on some level.

I play a little mind game that I learned from “Your Success Method by Michael Kennedy” …so whenever I feel that I’m gonna procrastinate on a task or feeling that my motivation is off, I start playing this “game” in my mind that reframes the whole task and makes it a whole lot easier for me to work on the task instead of letting my mind say “I’ll do it later”, its not the same as visualisations which is less powerful IMO
@Itzaishaaa I read recently that “perfectionists procrastinate”. If you always aim for 100%, maybe aim slightly lower and you may find it easier to get the task done. 🤷🏻♀️
@Itzaishaaa yeah our cellphones are a huge source of distraction that I didn’t really notice until I started using it less. My procrastination always felt like it stemmed from having to do tasks that I just did not like doing e.g. reading and replying to emails, and delivering bad news. After I accepted that people/co-workers relied on me to do these tasks (and my job), I felt more accountable and obligated to get them done in a timely manner. Still not perfect and still procrastinate, but trying to make progress everyday definitely.
@tek ah I get it I’m gonna try it because recently procrastination has gotten the best of me and it’s not great😬
@Itzaishaaa the "game" i usually play is 'let's be happy we have a job and do the work' hahaha jk but working in sales for the last 5 years, i definitely found leaving my cell phone on my bed while i'm at my desk, and time-blocking a set of tasks that are similar. really focusing on a single task, one at a time, really helps boost productivity despite what you think about multi-tasking. grouping tasks up that are similar just helps streamline my overall workflow. all this isn't really a game but is how i try to stay motivated for work.
