What is oracle? I used to work on a database that was web-fronted so you culd access it from any networked pc with the right security password etc. The language used to develop this system was VB - visual basic - but somebody asked me if it was an 'oracle' database - is this another language or can an Oracle database be written in VB? Is Oracle the platform of some sort and VB the coding or can you only have one or the other, not both??? sorry, not very technical, just a user! so if a database is written in Vb, can the 'make' still be Oracle???

Oracle 9i &10G Performance Issue from 2000-2003 Server? Hi, Since upgrading our database machine to 2003 server we noticed that the time to perform certian tasks with Oracle takes a lot more time. We've created a test environment in which we have a Windows 2000 Server with oracle 9i and a windows 2003 server with Oracle 9i. Both have identical hardware, software is just the OS and oracle. After monitoring the application while having it run here's what we found. The execute time in Oracle 9i/10G for updates and procedures in 2003 Server takes about twice as long vs in 2000 Server. Has anyone ran into this problem and know how to fix it?

Switching carrer from Oracle Apps to SAP HRMS functional Consultant? Hi, I have come across a interesting career turn in now a days. After completing my Engg in IT,4.5 yrs before I have started working as a technical consultant in Oracle working on D2K, Forms-Reports 6i, PL/SQL. After 2 years, I entered into Oracle Applications 11i as a technical consultant in HRMS/Payroll/CRM/Mfg/Finance module. And now I have landed in IT industry as a Oracle Apps HRMS/Payroll Techno-Functional Consultant. Now I am working for a MNC in Singapore which is entirely into HR Business.So far I have played a role of technical/functional consultant/ Team Lead in Oracle Apps HRMS/payroll.Now My company has no projects in Oracle Apps HRMS. But they are very good market player in SAP. So they want me to shift into SAP HRMS as a Functional consultant. But I am bit confused at this stage, whether to take this challenge to enter into SAP or go back to Oracle Apps. Certainly my aim is to become a HR/Payroll functional consultant. Perl & Oracle Updating varchar fields with newlines? Greetings, I am working on a Perl script to read through an Oracle extract file containing two fields. The first is a table key field and the second is a 2000 max character varchar2 field containing notes. Some of those notes contain embedded new line characters. The script performs a replacement on a certain pattern (if present). I read the file binary raw, unpack, search & replace on the pattern, chomp the field, prepare the field for updating (including eliminating field delimiter characters and prepping embedded apostrophes), format the update statement, and update. I added in code to attempt to escape newlines (i.e. replace \n with \\n) and I just gave pack a try to format the update statement (using both a & b to encode the update statement). Is there a special character I can substitute new lines for? Is there a function to help out here? BTW, I am accessing Oracle via Win32::ODBC Thanks Mark

Oracle re-install on Vista OS? Hi, I am trying to re-install Oracle Client 10g version 10.2.0 on vista but for some reason it is not installing. I deleted everything from the registry related to oracle , c:\oracle, from system path but still i am not able to install. The installer window comes, checks everything, everything success and starts installing. withing few seconds, installer window closes without error/warnings. There is no log file c:\...inventory\logs... no event errors or anything. Could somebody please tell me what to do or how to proceed. Data. OracleClient. OracleConnection but I need to connect using Oracle. DataAccess. Client. OracleConnection (I need GetTimeStampTZ) and it doesn't take a server attribute in the connection string (doesn't work with this format). It wants something like "Service Name=[service]; user id=[id]; password=[password]". How can I use that to connect to a remote database (where do I put the server name)? I got it working.
